Sometimes a photograph provides a wonderful reminder that Kiwanis service in Coeur d’Alene goes back a long way.
The September 20 edition of the Coeur d’Alene Press featured this photo from its archives showing members of the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene working with the city to spruce up the City Park walkway in September 1981.
The club contributed $1,200 – roughly $4,400 in today’s dollars – along with volunteer labor toward improvements to the park’s walkway, benches and trees.
And there are some familiar names from Coeur d’Alene history in the photograph.
Shown from left are Dave Chapman, then president of the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene; Red Halpern, Coeur d’Alene’s longtime Parks and Recreation director; Bill Dahlberg, chairman of the Kiwanis project; and Doug Eastwood, then the city’s parks supervisor.
Halpern served as Coeur d’Alene’s Parks and Recreation director from 1951 to 1985 and was also a major figure in Idaho softball, eventually earning induction into the North Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame.
Eastwood was still relatively early in his city career when this photo was taken. He would go on to become Coeur d’Alene’s Parks Director and retire in 2013 after 35 years with the city. During those years, Coeur d’Alene’s park system grew dramatically, and Eastwood played an important role in the development of the parks and trails our community enjoys today.
For our club, the photograph is also a great snapshot of something that hasn’t changed.
For generations, members of the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene have donated their time, talents and resources to projects that make our community a better place.
The projects change. The faces change. The spirit of service continues.
Our thanks to the Coeur d’Alene Press for digging into its archives and bringing this piece of our club’s history back to light.

🥫🚗 320 FAMILIES SERVED — ANOTHER GREAT DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE! 💙
On October 8, the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene once again teamed up with Second Harvest Inland Northwest to distribute food to local families at Community United Methodist Church.
The need was clear! Cars began lining up a couple of hours before the scheduled start, so volunteers got to work early. Over the next 4½ hours, 320 families received much-needed food assistance!
👏 We were grateful to be joined by volunteers from the United Women in Faith, Wells Fargo Bank, our Aktion Club, and other community members who generously gave their time.
🌟 A special shout-out to our amazing Aktion Club members! Several joined us for the distribution, enthusiastically pitching in and enjoying the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their community. Seeing their pride, energy, and joy in serving others was one of the highlights of the day!
Events like this remind us what can be accomplished when neighbors and community organizations work together.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this another successful food distribution!

Celebrating a Great Year of Kiwanis Service! 🎉
Our annual Installation Banquet on September 30 was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an incredibly busy and successful year for the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene—and, most importantly, to recognize the members who made it all happen.
Throughout the past year, our members gave generously of their time, talents, and resources, participating in a remarkable variety of service projects, supporting local organizations and young people, strengthening our community partnerships, and enjoying plenty of fellowship along the way. Thank you to every one of our members who helped make the year such a success!
And, of course, the banquet marked the beginning of a new Kiwanis year. Kim Cummings was installed as President, Jeanie Nugent as President-Elect, with Kathy Bush continuing as Secretary and Matt Palmer as Treasurer. Mike Lane moves into the role of Immediate Past President, and we welcomed our new and returning Board members.
The evening also included a special recognition as Matt Palmer was named our 2025–26 Kiwanian of the Year, honoring his service and contributions to the club during the past year.
We’re grateful to everyone who served in a leadership role this past year and to those who have stepped forward to lead us in 2026–27. But most of all, thank you to all of our members. Everything our club accomplishes is possible because of your willingness to serve.
It was a great year—and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish together in the next one!

Lake City Key Club Starts the Year with Service! 💙
The Lake City High School Key Club kicked off its new year of community service with a cleanup at McEuen Park on October 10.
Seven Key Club members spent about two hours on the project, joined by Key Club advisor Jamie Hardin and our own Mike Lane, Immediate Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Coeur d’Alene.
We’re incredibly proud of these young people and their commitment to service, leadership, and personal growth. One of the great joys of sponsoring the Lake City Key Club is getting to serve alongside them—and watching them grow and mature along the way.
This is just their first service project of the school year. We’re looking forward to a great year ahead!
